Women in the cities

Urbanic's beloved cities and the women who live there.

How do these women, who embody the atmosphere and energy of their respective cities, wear Urbanic? Though they differ in location, age, and taste, they all find joy in expressing Urbanic's style in their own ways. Experience the diverse people and senses of various cities through Urbanic30.

Dakota Butler, New York

@reltubatokad, Dakota Butler, a New York-based influencer and visual consultant, introduces her favorite cafés and bars in the West Village as the model for Urbanic’s fall campaign.
Here are her favorite spots in New York, perfect for soaking in the city’s autumn atmosphere.
All clothing worn in the photos is from Urbanic.

Urbanic (U): Can you introduce yourself?

Dakota (D): My name is Dakota Butler, and I work as a visual consultant for fashion and design brands here in New York.

U: How would you describe your style in a few words?

D: My style is ‘very particularly simplistic.’ I prefer specific fits and fabrics, but I never dress in anything flashy. I typically wear simple pants, especially wide-leg trousers made of virgin wool, and cashmere sweaters. In warmer weather, I go for sleeveless tops. And I always wear Maison Margiela’s Tabi shoes. I own eight pairs of Tabi shoes.

U: What are you currently interested in?

D: Writing! I write in my journal every day, and I occasionally post on my Substack page (https://substack.com/@reltubatokad). I’d like to write short stories one day. Lately, I’ve also been really into reading. I just finished a stack of books I had bought and immediately went to buy more (you can check out my reading list on my Substack).

U: What’s your favorite movie?

D: ‘You’ve Got Mail’. I must have watched it a hundred times. I love the chemistry between Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, and the ‘enemies-to-lovers’ plot is heartwarming. It also makes me nostalgic for New York during that era.

U: Is there a song that reminds you of your childhood?

D: “Boys Don’t Cry” by The Cure. I have a memory of driving with my dad, just the two of us, when the song came on the radio. He told me it was his favorite, and that moment has stuck with me ever since.

U: In this New York shoot, you visited three of your favorite spots. Can you tell us about each of them?

D: Fellini Coffee is a cozy spot, and its location is amazing. It’s on a triangular corner building on 7th Avenue with charming windows. The shop gets busy as soon as it opens. I love sitting on the west side, soaking up the sunlight while sipping my morning coffee. When I’m not having an Americano, I order a dirty chai latte.

Bar Pisellino is where I go to soak in the West Village atmosphere. I’ve been going there since 2019, and it’s great for people-watching. It’s especially lovely in spring, summer, and early fall when the outdoor seating is available. I like to sit facing the quiet Grove Street, enjoying a Negroni or Pilsner with a prosciutto finger sandwich. Once, I went there alone to read, but friends joined me, and we ended up staying for four hours! It’s that kind of place.

Sogno Toscano is a hidden gem. Half Italian grocery, half café and bar, the small, intimate space inside feels charming, and the outdoor seating is great. Their charcuterie is flavorful, and the coffee is amazing.

U: What do you love most about New York’s diverse appeal?

D: In New York, anything is possible. The convenience of being able to get a snack or drink anytime is especially great. It’s a city full of things to do, but you can also enjoy it by doing nothing at all. It’s perfect for spending time alone in a café or meeting new people. New York always has something to match your mood.

U: What inspires your personal style?

D: When I was younger, I experimented with various styles. But now, I think my experiences and day-to-day life have had the biggest influence on my style. I prioritize comfort more than anything now. I believe maintaining a certain consistency in your style makes it more sustainable and chic, and it makes my life easier. Rather than trying to stand out with trendy items, I think adding interesting textures or shapes is the way to go.

U: You wore several outfits for Urbanic’s fall campaign photoshoot. Which piece was your favorite?
D: I loved the gray wool sweater and denim pants— the Rigby Knit paired with the Judy Denim Pants. It’s classic and comfortable, perfect for my off-duty days.

U: Are there any designers, artists, or places that have influenced your fashion and design?

D: I love brands that focus on simplicity. I’m also drawn to designers who have a great approach to color. In the same vein, I love the colors and overall tones used by artists like Lucio Fontana, Cy Twombly, Rembrandt, and Edward Hopper.

The places I visit regularly also have a laid-back atmosphere. I was captivated by the simplicity and beauty when I visited Norway, and my home in upstate New York gives off a similar vibe. In the end, most of the things I like are rooted in simplicity, and I think that reflects in how I approach life.
